Linda's Diary

1st Enrty- I have had a wonderful day today! Willy brought home a whopping 115 dollars today! That means that we will have plenty of money this month. He was in such a good mood that he brought me home some new stockings! Today has been great because I got to go see Biff play football and his team won. Did I tell you that he is captain of the football team? We are so proud of him. We are so proud of both of our sons. Happy has been doing great as well and I have noticed he is losing some weight.

2nd Entry- The closer Biff is from home, the worse Willy is with his sleeptalking. I just wish that they would both get along because then Willy wouldn't keep having these problems. Willy is falling apart and I am having trouble comforting him and helping him. I just want him to be happy so my family can be happy. He used to be a good man but now is struggling with himself personally. His business hasnt been doing well and that is destroying him. Our boys have also been the problem as to why Willy has been this way. If only my boys would make something of themselves! Hopefully I can get Biff to try and talk to Willy.

The Lottery

d- The concept that it can be acceptable to require the individual to
sacrifice for the greater good.

This short story reminded me a lot about the theme that a community can think that sacrifice is for the greater good. I feel as if religions do this a lot. When they believe something, they are willing to do anything for that belief. Sometimes it may seem irrational to others but is normal to them. Especially if you have a large community that thinks the same thing. When it isn't only you thinking that sacrifice is okay, you tend to think that it is a normal thing. An example of this is our different cultures around the world. What we think is weird in America, could be normal in a different culture.
I think that sometimes people can be brainwashed to think that something is alright. An example of this is during the holocaust when the germans were killing so many people. A normal person would think that killing people isnt normal but when such a large group of people are doing the same thing, it seems to be normal. The older generations in the short story convince the younger generations that it is okay to sacrifice someone so their crops will thrive. Old man Warner is an example of this in the short story. One of the characters mentions that other villages have already quit the lottery and old man warner got angry and told them that that just isnt right. He convinces them that sacrificing a person is okay.

Girl Imitation

Don't slouch when you are talking to people. Don't say, "Sup, dude?" unless it is directed towards your friends. Take a shower everyday and use soap. Always listen and respect your teachers even when you think they are wrong. Brush your teeth and put on deodorant. Every girl and woman needs to be treated fairly. Share with your siblings. Don't text at the dinner table. You will work hard for the allowance we give you. Don't text at school or I will have to take it away from you. Don't spend so much time on the internet. Go outside and play with your friends. Stop playing so many video games. Respect your elders because they are wiser than you. Do your homework every single day. Mow the lawn when your father tells you to do so. Dress nicely when you go to church. Remember that God is important in your life. Read your bible. Get along with your siblings. Spend quality time with your family. Get good grades so you can get scholarships in the future. Be nice to everyone you meet. Take out the garbage. Be polite. Do thoughtful things for people. Treat every girl like they are a princess. Don't cry when you are hurt. Do well in sports. Open doors for people. Listen to your coach and go to practice everyday. Always do your best. Never give up. Don't have sex until you're married. Don't talk with your mouth full. You are only allowed 1 hour of computer games a day. Listen to what your mother tells you. Listen to what your father tells you. Listen to what your grandparents, teachers, and the pastor tell you. Listen. Listen. Listen.

Dialogue

It was a long day of writing essays, figuring out math equations, and reading

assignments. Sitting at the same table in the cafeteria for 4 hours can be a real pain in the

buttocks. Around 9 pm, I finally get around to the last bit of my anatomy homework.

Exhausted, I try to stay awake as I try to memorize the process of the sodium-potassium

pump and figure out what happens with muscle contractions. The only thing keeping me

awake is this twix candy bar, Family Guy on the TV, and the bickering of the distressed

couple two tables from me.

"We both know that this isn't going to work anymore." She said.

"But baby, we can work this out. You just need to listen to what I am trying to tell you."

"We have been over this multiple times, Jeff. Our beliefs are just too different."

"I told you that I would be willing to go to your church more often." He said as he tried to hold her hand.

The girl then closed her eyes and rubbed the back of her neck to try and relieve the

stress. "But whenever you go to my church, I can tell that you want to get the heck out of

there! If you can't accept the people in my church, then why would this ever work?"

"Well, if those people were more excepting and welcoming of me then maybe I

would actually enjoy going there." He said with a sarcastic voice.

"THOSE people?! Those people are practically my family!" She yelled.

"THOSE people look at me like I'm some kind of alien!"

"What do you suppose I do then, Jeff? I love my church and I am not willing to leave them for some guy."

"Some guy? That's really how you view our relationship because I thought it was

more than that!" He said almost as if he was about to break out in tears.

After a long pause the girl says in a monotone voice "Well... maybe I do view our

relationship that way... Maybe I do want this to be over."

For about five minutes they both stared at eachother without saying a word. The

guy then gets out of his chair, looks her in the eyes, says, "Okay... it's over then." and

walks out of the building defeated.

The minute he leaves, she bursts into tears and whispers, "I've made a mistake"

atleast twenty different times. The agony she showed on her face was worse than leaving

a puppy in a snowstorm. Time seemed to slow down as I watched her sit there and cry

alone.

Miracuously, I hear the door swing open with the guy running towards the girl.

She sees him approaching and they both embrace for what feels like eternity.

"This WILL work out." They both said as they continued holding one another.

Test prep 2

A type of figure of speech is called personification.

Personification is a type of metaphor in which human characteristics are given to something inanimate, animal, or abstract.

An example of personification is "The sun kissed the flowers." The sun is given the human characteristic of kissing.

Here is an example of personification in a poem:

The Railway Train

I like to see it lap the miles,
And lick the valleys up,
And stop to feed itself at tanks;
And then, prodigious, step

Around a pile of mountains,
And, supercilious, peer
In shanties by the sides of roads;
And then a quarry pare

To fit its sides, and crawl between,
Complaining all the while
In horrid, hooting stanza;
Then chase itself down the hill

And neigh like Boanerges;
Then, punctual as a star,
Stop - docile and omnipotent -
At its own stable door.

Test Prep

The term is Paraphrase. The definition the book has is "to render freely, or amplify, a passage, or express its sense in other words."
True or False: Paraphrasing means to "refer indirectly to something presumably known to the listener or reader.
True or False: Paraphrasing in poetry is usually set off with quotations.

An example of a paraphrased poem:

Sonnet 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?: Shall I compare you to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate: You are more lovely and more constant:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May: stormy winds shake May flower
And summer's lease hath all too short a date: And summer is far too short:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines: At times the sun is too hot,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd: Or often goes behind the clouds;
And every fair from fair sometime declines: And everything beautiful sometime will lose its beauty,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd: By misfortune or by nature's planned out course.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade: But your youth shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest: even death will not take you away from beauty,
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade: Nor will death claim you for his own,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest: Because in my eternal verse you will live forever.
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see: So long as there are people on this earth,
So long lives this and this gives life to thee: So long will this poem live on, making you immortal
